Indian Wells CA, November 6-12 (55 Hard)

In an unusually unpredictable singles event, Thomas Connell emerged with the gold ball by defeating Mark Peterson 6-3,6-2 in the semis and then going the distance against Leonard Wofford 3-6,7-5,7-6 in the final.  Wofford had bested #3 Joe Bouquin 6-2,6-0.  Top seed Brian Cheney and #2 Padg Bolton were both soundly beaten in the round of 16:  Cheney went down to Haig Bedrossian 6-3,6-2 and Bolton to Robert Van Malder 6-2,6-3.  Seeding prevailed in the doubles as #1 Neal Newman & Larry Turville needed three sets in both the semis and finals to first defeat #3 Dan Bohannon & Philip Landauer 3-6,6-4,6-3 and then #2 Cheney & Connell 6-4,3-6,6-4.  Cheney & Connell had bested Wofford & Paul Wulf 6-4,3-6,6-2.

Duluth GA, October 8-15 (60 Clay)

Jimmy Parker returned to top form and the winner's circle by winning six matches with the loss of only one set.  Parker, seeded #5, was tested in the semis by #3 Richard Johnson 2-6,7-7,6-3 and then defeated #4 Geoffrey Moore 6-4,6-4 in the final, Moore having previously bested David Nash 6-0,6-4. Nash had upset top seed Michael Beautyman in the quarters 6-3,7-6(4).  Another fifth seed won the doubles as Beautyman & Moore had some good fortune in the semis as Ken Robinson was injured while leading:  thus Beautyman & Moore won over top seeds Parker & Robinson 6-7(3),1-3, ret(inj) and went on to defeat #2 Jerry Kirk & Hugh Thomson 6-4,1-6,6-4 in the final.  Kirk & Thomson had bested #3 Leland Housman & Johnson 6-0,6-4.

Duluth GA, October 1-8 (55 Clay)

Form held as the top four seeds advanced to the semis in singles and doubles with just one exception.  Top seed Larry Turville captured the singles crown with a convincing wins over #3 Brian Cheney 6-3,6-2 in the semis and then over #2 Armistead Neely 6-2,6-3 in the final.  Neely had defeated #4 Padg Bolton 4-6,6-2,6-1.  Turville & Neal Newman, seeded #1, captured the doubles with relative ease with a walkover win in the semis over unseeded Bolton & Steven Cornell and then victory over #2 Cheney & Neely 6-2,6-2.  Cheney & Neely had been tested by #3 Dan Bohannon & Philip Landauer 3-6,7-5,6-3 in the semis.  In the quarters, Turville & Newman's had narrowly defeated Wesley Jackson & Paul Wulf 7-6(4),6-4 while Bolton & Cornell went to the brink to upset #4 Jon Hainline & Brian Marcus 7-6(4),2-6,7-5.

Pinehurst NC, September 11-17 (70, 85 & 90 Clay)

Gordon Davis reversed his surprising quarter-final loss the previous week by defeating the seemingly unbeatable King Van Nostrand 6-4,6-1 to capture his sixth 70 singles gold ball in two years.  In the semis Davis had routed Jim Shakespeare 6-1,6-0 while Van Nostrand was tested by a red hot Bob Duesler 6-2,5-7,6-3.  Shakespeare, who appeared to have no chance in the quarters, just managed to oust Jim Landin 0-6,6-3,7-6(7).  Duesler & Jim Nelson continued their dominance in the 70 doubles with the loss of only 11 games in three matches (plus a walkover).  They defeated Jim Elsman & J.B. Hayes in the semis 6-4,6-1 and followed that by once again besting Bill Hyde & Landin 6-3,6-0.  Hyde & Landin had needed three sets to defeat Len Lindborg & Gord Nichol 6-4,3-6,6-4.

In the 85s, Bob Sherman added another gold ball to his considerable collection.  He clobbered Ken Hayes 6-0,6-0 in the semis and then needed three sets to best a battle-tested Ed Selfe 6-2,4-6,6-1.  Selfe had ousted second seed Marvin Henderson by the identical score 6-2,4-6,6-1.  Top seeds Jim Carleton & Hayes easily won the doubles by rolling over Sherman & Dick Zeller 6-1,6-1 in the semis and Henderson & Ellis Williamson 6-0,6-2 in the final.  Henderson & Williamson had ousted Ted Heisler & W.T. Mathes 6-3,6-4.

Ted Zoob prevailed once again in the 90s by winning gold balls in singles and doubles.  Zoob defeated Paul Decamp 6-2,6-3 and then a tiring David Carey 4-6,6-4,6-0 in the final.  Carey had edged Irving Converse 6-0,4-6,6-4.  The team of Carey & Zoob dominated play in the five-team 90 doubles round robin losing only three games in three matches and then benefiting from a walkover from Converse & Dan Miller due to Miller's illness.

Arlington VA, September 11-17 (75 & 80 Clay)

Top seed Russell Seymour's injury gave a walkover gold ball to second seed Lorne Main in the 75 singles but did not prevent Seymour & Don Dippold from winning the doubles over top seeds Peter Crewe & George McCabe 6-3,6-3.  In the semis of the singles Main had ousted Chuck Devoe 6-3,6-2 while Seymour had dominated McCabe 6-2,6-1.  In the doubles semis Crewe & McCabe waxed Wayne Hippenstiel & Joe Russell 6-0, 6-1 while Dipppold & Seymour narrowly defeated Dick Devoe & Main 6-3,7-6(5).

Tony Franco notched a pair of upset wins to capture gold in the 80 singles.  He defeated second seed Graydon Nichols 6-4,6-4 in the final having ousted top seed Bill Weathers 6-2,6-2 in the semis.  Nichols had bested Bob Meyerdierks 6-3,6-1.  Franco & Nichols paired effectively in the 80 doubles to smother Roald Flater & Weathers 6-0,6-1 in the semis followed by a dominating win over Meyerdierks & Bill Tully 6-3,6-1.  Meyerdierks & Tully had defeated Paul Roberts & Lee Smith 7-5,6-3 in the semis.

Lawrence NY, September 11-16 (55 & 60 Grass)

Top seed Bob Litwin came up big in the 55s with gold balls in singles and doubles.  In the singles semis he came from behind to defeat Wesley Jackson 1-6-7-5,6-1 and followed that with a final win over second seed Philip Landauer 6-4,6-3.  Landauer had bested Brian Cheney 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 7-5 in an extremely close semi.  Cheney had a measure of revenge as the team of Cheney & Litwin came from behind to defeat Landauer & Neal Newman 4-6,6-3,6-4 in the doubles final having previously ousted Peter Bromley & Fernando Gentil 6-2,7-6(0) while Landauer & Newman had defeated Mike Barnes & Jackson 6-1,6-2.

Fred Drilling's run of upsets ended when he was finally bested by top seed Michael Beautyman 6-4,6-2 in the finals of the 60 singles.  Fifth seed Drilling had just managed to defeat second seed Charlie Hoeveler 2-6,7-6(8),6-3 while Beautyman was handling Colin Robertson 6-1,3-0,ret(inj).  Form held in the 60 doubles with top seed David Bryant & Jimmy Parker defeating second seeds Jerry Kirk & Hugh Thomson 6-1,6-4 in the final.  Bryant & Parker had defeated Drilling & Robyn Ray 6-2,4-6,6-2 while Kirk & Thomson bested Dean Corley & Mike Stewart 6-3,1-6,6-3.

Philadelphia PA, September 5-11 (70 Grass)

Number two seed Herman Ahlers prevailed again in the singles besting Larry Sears in the semis 7-5,6-2 and then topping Bob Duesler in a closely contested final 7-6(7),6-7(5),6-3.  Duesler had ousted Jim Landin 6-3,6-0 in the semis after an eye-opening upset of top seed Gordon Davis 6-0,6-4 in the quarters.   Duesler & Jim Nelson once again demonstrated their dominance in 70 doubles.  They cruised to the title with easy victories over Karl Kamrath & Gord Nichol 6-1,6-1 in the semis and then over Bill Hyde & Landin 6-0,6-1 in the finals.  Hyde and Landin had narrowly defeated Sears & Len Lindborg 5-7-6-3,6-4.

South Orange NJ, September 5-10 (75 & 80 Grass)

Top seed Lorne Main repeated his 2005 win in the 75s at South Orange besting Chuck Devoe 7-5,6-3 following a semi-final win over Joe Russell 6-2,6-0.  Devoe had narrowly defeated George McCabe 7-6,7-6.  Devoe & Russell prevailed in the 75 doubles with a semi-final win over brother Dick Devoe & Lorne Main 7-6,6-4 and then a win in the finals over Joe Beeson & Jerry Pope who had ousted Peter Crewe & McCabe 6-3,6-3.

Graydon Nichols once again prevailed in the 80s besting doubles partner Tony Franco 6-4,6-1 in the singles final.  In the semis, Nichols had ousted Roald Flater 6-1,6-1 while Franco topped Bob Meyerdierks 6-4,6-3.   Franco & Nichols won the doubles comfortably with a semi-final win over Paul Roberts & Lee Smith 6-1,6-1 followed by a final win over Meyerdierks & Bill Tully 6-3,6-3.

Seeding prevailed in all four events with one exception.  The top seed defeated the second seed is three finals while the semi-final losers were seeded three and four.  The exception:  Beeson & Pope's semi-final victory over top seeds Crewe & McCabe.

Rumson NJ, September 5-10 (65 Grass)

Injuries abounded as unseeded Ralph Howe bested fourth seed Allan Carter in the final 6-2,7-6(3) after both had enjoyed walkovers in the semis:  Howe over Rudy Hernando and Carter over top seed Del Campbell.  Carter & Geof Grant won the doubles title with wins over Ivo Barbic & Sam Corso 6-0,4-6,6-4 in the semis and then over Allan Drazen & George Sarantos 6-4,6-3.  Drazen & Sarantos had bested Hernando & Don Biedinger 3-6,6-4,6-0.  Barbic & Corso had narrowly defeated top seeds Del Campbell & Richard Landenberger in the quarters 6-3,6-7(8),6-3.

Chestnut Hill MA, August 26 - September 1 (85 & 90 Grass)

Bob Sherman added two more gold balls to his considerable collection as he won the 85 singles with a semi-final win over Jules Plangere 6-1,6-0 and a final win over Ed Selfe 6-2,6-2.  Selfe had edged Ted Heisler 7-6(5),6-3 in the semis.  Sherman & Selfe prevailed in the 85 doubles without the loss of a set in a four-team round-robin; their only close set was an initial set tiebreak in the first-round against Heisler and W.T. Mathes.

Irving Converse doubles up in the 90s by winning both the singles and doubles.  Converse bested third seed Tracy Strong 6-3,6-2 in the semis and then second seed Barrett Scallet 6-1,6-4 in the final.  Scallet had walloped unseeded James Talman 6-0,6-1 in the semis. Converse & Dan Miller teamed effectively in the doubles to best Wolfgang Marcuse & Walter Ralphs 6-0,6-2 in the semis followed by a three-setter over Scallet & Norman Stoll in the final 6-7(5),6-3,6-3.

Dan Miller joins Gordon Davis as gold-ball winners who've given money to SuperSenior.info.  Thanks to Dan and Gordon — and to our other supporters as well.

Both playoffs were (sadly) unplayed as the "get out of Dodge" syndrome was again in evidence.

San Francisco CA, July 31 - August 6 (65 Indoor)

Del Campbell demonstrated his singles chops by besting #1 seed Rudy Hernando in a closely contested final 5-7,6-2,7-6(3).  Campbell had defeated Richard Fried in the semis 6-3,6-4 while Rudy had posted a win over Gene Waters 6-2,6-3.  Hernando & Don Biedinger captured the doubles title with a semi-final walkover over Fried & Geof Grant followed by a convincing final win over Campbell & Richard Landenberger 6-1,6-4.  Campbell & Landenberger had narrowly bested top seeds Henry Leichtfried & George Sarantos in the semis 6-4,3-6,6-4.

Irvine CA, June 19-25 (65 & 70 Hard)

65s newcomer Allan Carter came up big on the hard courts of California with convincing singles wins over top seed Joe Bachman 6-1,6-4 in the semis and Del Campbell 6-2,6-4 in the final.  Campbell had defeated Richard Landenberger 7-5,6-2.  Form prevailed in the 65 doubles as top-seeds Henry Leichtfried & George Sarantos bested second seeds Bachman & Campbell 3-6,4-0, ret(inj) in the finals after having bested the team of Carter & Geof Grant 2-6,7-5,6-1.  Bachman & Campbell had narrowly defeated the third seeded team of Don Biedinger & Rudy Hernando 5-7,7-6,7-5 in the semis.

Gordon Davis resumed his winning ways in the 70 singles by reversing his Indoor loss to Herman Ahlers winning by 7-6,6-2.  In the semi-finals Davis had routed Jim Shakespeare 6-1,6-2 while Ahlers won narrowly over Bob Duesler 6-4,7-5.  Some things in life seem invariable  — like Jim Nelson and gold balls in doubles.  Duesler & Nelson defeated Jim Perley & Robert Perry 6-1,6-3 in the semis and then Bill Hyde & Jim Landin 6-2,6-2 in the final.  Hyde and Landin had routed Len Lindborg & Gord Nichol 6-2,6-0.

Rancho Santa Fe CA, May 15-20 (75,80,85 Hard)

It's 2005 once again in the 85s as Bob Sherman again more avenges his prior week loss to Marvin Henderson at the Indoors with a hard-fought win on the hard courts 7-5,6-4.  In the semis Sherman bested Edwin Tyler 6-4,6-0 while Henderson defeated Jerry Greer 6-1,6-3.  Henderson & Bill Kuntz clobbered top seeds Jim Carleton & Ken Hayes in the doubles final 6-1,6-1 having outlasted Sherman & Alex Swetka in the semis 1-6,7-6,6-2.  Carleton & Hayes had defeated Edward Baumer & Tyler 6-1,6-3.

In the 80s Graydon Nichols continued his string of dominant wins by defeating Lewis Stephenson 6-1,6-2 in the semis and then Vince Fotre in the final 6-2,7-6.  Fotre had bested Bob Seymour 7-6,6-3.  The team of Nichols & Jim Mackey cruised in doubles with a semi-final win over Ronald Dunas & Fotre 6-2,6-3 followed by a walkover victory over Keith Freelin & Don Tobey.  Freelin & Tobey had outlasted second seeds Paul Roberts & Lee Smith 4-6,6-3,6-4 in the quarters and Seymour & Stephenson 6-3,6-2 in the semis.

Russell Seymour reasserted himself by reversing his loss to Chuck Devoe at the Indoors with a 7-6,6-0 win.  In the semis Seymour had dominated John Bradshaw 6-0,6-1 while Devoe bested Scott Denison 6-4,6-4.  In a hotly contested doubles final the team of Wayne Hippenstiel & Bob Isenberg narrowly defeated Devoe & Seymour 7-5,0-6,7-6.  Devoe & Seymour had bested Leonard Karp & Earl Schalin 6-0,6-4 while Hippenstiel & Isenberg outlasted Ed Adams & Len Bunge 5-7,6-2,6-2.

Vancouver WA, May 9-13 (80,85,90 Indoor)

Bob Meyerdierks came up big winning both the 80 singles and doubles titles.  He bested Don Tobey 6-0,6-4 in the semis and unseeded Roald Flater 7-5,4-6,6-2 in the final.  Flater had defaed Irving Tebor 6-4,2-0,ret(inj).  Meyerdierks and former partner Jim Mackey renewed their partnership with a walkover semi-final win over Tebor & Stanley Zaklan before besting Towson Ellis & Vincent Fotre 6-2,6-4 in the final.

In the 85s, Marvin Henderson repeated his 2005 upset win over Bob Sherman 6-2,6-3 after his semi-final win over Alex Swetka 6-1,6-3.  Sherman had bested Ed Selfe 6-2,3-6,6-3.  The unseeded team of Dyle Anderson & Fred Darling prevailed in the doubles with three-set wins over Henderson & Bill Kuntz 6-1,2-6,6-2 in the semis and then over Selfe & Ellis Williamson 6-3,6-7(5),6-3 in the final.  Selfe & Williamson had defeated top seeds Jim Carleton & Ken Hayes 6-3,6-3.

No. 1 seed Barrett Scallet defeated second seed Tracy Strong 6-4,6-4 in the final having bested Robert Cassidy 6-0,6-2 in the semis.  Strong had bested Doug Crary 6-0,6-2.  The team of Scallet & Norman Stoll dominated the four-team round robin in the 90 doubles finishing with a convincing win over runners-up Strong & Robert Newman.

New Orleans LA, May 1-7 (65 Clay)

Joe Bachman posted dominating wins in both singles and doubles.  Bachman coasted in the third set of his semi with Lou Monte 6-1,6-7(4),5-0(ret) and proceeded to overwhelm Rudy Hernando in the final by the surprising score of 6-2,6-1.  Hernando had bested Bill Cover 3-6,7-5,6-1.  Bachman partnered with Del Campbell to easily capture the doubles over Hernando & Don Biedinger 6-0,6-3.  In the semis, Bachman & Campbell had bested Ivo Barbic & Hill Griffin 6-4,6-3 while Hernando & Biedinger were defeating John Gorsky & Charles Joslin 5-7,6-1,6-0.

Happily, both third-place playoff matches were contested — a rare occurrence.  Lou Monte defeated Bill Cover 3-6,7-5,6-1 in a match lasting 3½ hours!  In the doubles playoff Barbic & Griffin bested Gorsky & Joslin 6-1,6-1.

Boise ID, April 30 - May 6 (55 Indoors)

Philip Landauer came up big in Boise winning both gold balls. He defeated Wesley Jackson 6-1,6-2 in the semis followed by Leonard Wofford 7-5,6-2 in the final. Wofford had bested top seed Brian Cheney 6-7,6-4, ret.  Landauer teamed with Neal Newman to win the doubles final by walkover over the injured Cheney and his partner, Dan Bohannon.  In the doubles semi-finals Landauer & Newman had bested Bill Matthews & Wofford 6-4,6-4 while Bohannon & Cheney eliminated Padg Bolton & Dar Walters.

 Houston TX, April 3 - 8 (70 & 75 Indoors)

What a finish in the 70 singles as Herman Ahlers bested Larry Sears 3-6,7-6(5),7-6(3) in a match between two "young" 70s!  Sears came as close as two points away at the end of the second set, but never closer.  Ahlers had bested top seed Gordon Davis 6-3,3-6,6-3 in an exciting semi-final match.  (Davis had captured all four 70 national singles titles in 2005.)  Meanwhile, Sears had handled Neil Hurlbut 6-2,6-2 in their semi-final. 

The team of Jim Nelson & Bob Duesler teamed anew this year and prevailed in the 70 doubles over Len Lindborg & Sears 5-7,6-1,6-1 in the semis and then over Bill Hyde & Jim Landin in the finals 7-6(3),6-1.  Hyde and Landin had defeated Courtney Henderson & Hurlbut in the semis 6-1,6-4.

Chuck Devoe cruised through the 75 singles besting top seed Russell Seymour 6-3,7-5 before polishing off unseeded finalist Scott Denison 6-3,6-1.  Denison had bested John Bradshaw (also unseeded) in the semis 7-5,6-3.  Form held in the 75 doubles as top seeds Seymour & Don Dippold bested Joe Beeson & Jerry Pope 6-3,6-2 in the semis and then defeated Devoe & Jerry Thomas 6-3,6-2 in the final.  Devoe & Thomas had defeated Denison & Joe Russell in the semis 6-3,6-3.

The new tournament venue, Downtown Club at the Met, was superb and the energy, commitment and ability of the club's staff were outstanding.  The club simultaneously hosted a tournament for the world's top women squash players and also provided free entry to the River Oaks stop on the ATP tour (today's power game on red clay between even second-tier players isn't close to what it used to be).

Campbell's Mission Hills CA, April 3 - 9 (60 & 90 Hard)

Seeding prevailed in the 60s as top seed Charles Hoeveler bested Michael Beautyman 7-6,6-7,6-3 in a tightly-played final match.  Hoeveler had defeated third seed Hugh Thomson 6-3,4-4,ret(inj) while Beautyman had defeated fourth seed Leland Housman 6-3,6-2.  The top-seeded team of Jim Parker & Ken Robinson bested Hoeveler & Dennis Ralston 7-5,6-3 in the semis and completed their tournament win by defeating Daud Ahmed & Dennis Trout 7-6,6-3 in the final.  Ahmed & Trout had won over second-seeded Jerry Kirk & Thomson 3-6,6-4,6-3 in the semis.

Irving Converse edged out top seed Fererico Barbaza 6-7,6-3,1-0(9) in the final of the 90 singles and the team of Converse & Dan Miller narrowly won the doubles over David Carey & Ted Zoob 6-7,6-4,1-0(8).  Barbaza had bested Akihiko Yamada in the semis 8-1 while Converse handled Claude de Montgolfier 8-2.  In the doubles semis Converse & Miller bageled the team of Barbaza & John Deurwaarder 8-0 while Carey & Zoob bested Hidesumi Sathke & Yamada 8-2.

Steve Solomon's promotional wizardry was challenged by circumstances:  locker and dining accommodations were overloaded due to incomplete clubhouse renovations combined with the ongoing Davis Cup tie between Chile and USA and one day's play was rained out (accounting for the pro sets in the 90s)!
